Robin
Bird facts
Robins are cheerful garden visitors that show us spring is on the way!
They are famous for their cozy, rusty-orange bellies, dark gray coats, and bright yellow beaks. Their round, chubby bodies make them look like happy bouncing balls as they hop across the lawn.
Robins are famous earthworm hunters. You will often see a robin tilt its head to listen carefully before pulling a wiggly worm right out of the soil! When robin mommies lay eggs in their snug, cup-shaped nests, the eggs are a magical bright sky-blue color. If you hear a cheerful, whistling "cheer-up, cheer-up" song outside your window in the morning, a friendly robin is singing hello!
Legends & folklore
Robins have inspired legends around the world! One such legend tells of a freezing winter night when a campfire was about to die out, endangering a sleeping child. A brave gray bird fluttered down, fanning the last glowing ember with its wings all night. The heat turned the bird's chest bright red, giving the robin its fiery badge forever.
In European folklore, a robin nesting near your home brings peace and good luck. Farmers believed its presence promised mild weather and bountiful crops.
In North America, the robin is the harbinger of spring. Stories say when the first robin sings its cheerful morning song, the ice will melt and warm days are officially on the way!
